PRP Facial Frequently Asked Questions
PRP – which stands for “Platelet Rich Plasma” – is a natural tissue rejuvenation procedure that has been used in sports medicine and orthopedics to regenerate joints for more than a decade. Now, this amazing, 100% natural technology is available at Elite Rejuvenations in Marion, OH for rejuvenating facial skin!
Non-surgical PRP Facial treatments actually restore the skin on a cellular level - for smoother, tighter more youthful skin. In this article, we will answer some of the most common questions our Marion, OH patients ask us about the new PRP Facial.
What is the PRP Facial Process?
A PRP Facial begins by extracting a small vial of the patient’s own blood from their arm – just like a routine blood test. A special centrifuge is then used to “spin” the blood and separate the fluid components from the red and white blood cells.
This fluid is called “platelet rich plasma” – or “PRP” – because it contains high concentrations of platelets. And these platelets are what stimulate the body’s natural cellular healing processes.
The separated plasma is then introduced into the facial treatment area, typically through microneedling. A syringe may also be used to inject the PRP into targeted areas of the face.
How does a PRP Facial Work?
Collagen and elastin are the protein “building blocks” of healthy skin. When we are young, facial skin looks smooth and plump because it contains high levels of collagen and elastin. However, aging, hormone decline, and environmental factors all decrease the production of collagen and elastin as we get older. As a result, skin begins to lose elasticity and sag, and wrinkles and fine lines develop.
But the concentrated “growth factors” that are contained in Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) encourage the body to renew production of collagen and elastin. As a result, the PRP Facial improves facial skin tone and texture, smooths lines and wrinkles, and heals scars and age spots.
What skin conditions can a PRP Facial Treat?
At Elite Rejuvenations in Marion, OH we have had excellent success in treating wrinkles, crow’s feet, lip lines, creases between the eyes, and folds or “marionette lines” around the mouth with PRP Facials.
PRP Facials are also exceptionally effective at erasing sun (age) spots, smoothing acne scars, and improving the tone, tightness and “plumpness” of lax or sagging facial skin.
Why is Microneedling used during a PRP Facial?
Microneedling is a treatment that uses ultra-fine, medical-grade needles to create hundreds of tiny piercings in the skin. The almost invisible microneedle piercings are perceived as “wounds” by the body – which then activates the cell’s natural healing and regenerative processes.
During the PRP Facial these miniscule needles create micro-channels that enable the PRP to penetrate the skin as deeply as possible – delivering growth factors to the cells deep within the dermis.
The body’s natural healing and repair processes then go into action, renewing production of collagen and elastin – resulting in smoother, plumper, more youthful-looking skin.
Does a PRP Facial Hurt?
To ensure there is no discomfort or pain during the PRP microneedling process, all of our patients are offered topical anesthetic. While most patients prefer to use this numbing cream during their PRP Facials, others feel they do not need it.
How long do PRP Facial results take?
Because the PRP Facial harnesses the body’s own natural healing and regeneration processes, it takes a few weeks for results to become visible. Results will continue to improve over the next few months, as the body continues to produce renewed levels of collagen and elastin.
A single PRP Facial can yield dramatic results for most patients. For individuals with more or deeper wrinkles, lines and/or scars, or more extensive sun damage, more than one PRP Facial may be recommended.
As the collagen and elastin production continues, patients will experience visibly thicker, plumper, tighter, firmer and more elastic skin. And, lines, wrinkles, redness, age spots and scars will be substantially reduced.
How much downtime is there with a PRP Facial?
Most patients can return to work or their normal activities right after their PRP Facial. In most cases, some slight redness or swelling of the skin typically occurs - but this should usually dissipate in only two or three days or less.
Patients should, however, wait 24-hours before applying makeup or sunscreen to the treated areas.
